You climb up onto the ice floe.
You dig into the snow with your fingers, and as you climb you realize that this is a much bigger surface than it looks. When you reach the top, you're greeted with cold winds, the sound of creaking ice, and a sundog in the sky.
This page of the site is dedicated to my love for all things cold, namely polar exploration and Inuit mythology and culture! My interest in these topics began when I watched AMC's "The Terror" and I was IMMEDIATELY obsessed with it. (trans jfj basically confirmed by dave k. HOW WE FEELING GAMERS) I got really into the fandom, of course, but also found myself drawn to the history and motives behind expeditions such as these. The idea that you can be so egotistical and so driven by your need to colonize and gain capital that you get yourself stuck in the ice and die. Crazy.
The character I found myself the most taken with was Silna, and this then lead to my interest in Inuit shamanism, then mythology and culture. I found myself obsessed with the language structure of the people indigenous to the coldest places of our world, the way that vowels are used and placed, the fact that in Kalaallisut, you can form a sentence with just one verb...it all fascinates me. I found myself looking up any videos I could, reading articles, journals, listening to songs in Inuktitut and Kalallisut, watching throat singing, finding influencers to follow when I was still on social media...I was a bit crazy about it, and I still am. I hope to visit Greenland one day, and go to the museum to see the mummies. I hope to travel and maybe even meet people, to talk to them directly about their stories and their history.

I've also done my own bit of reading on the subjects. It's not much by any means, but at the moment I have read "Endurance", about Ernest Shackleton's expedition to the South Pole, and "This Cold Heaven: Seven Seasons in Greenland", a memoir by Gretel Erlich, chronicling her journeys to the country and her experiences, both of which are very moving reads to me. If I hadn't gone with my school's orchestra on a trip to Scotland my senior year, I wouldn't have found the second book at all, and who knows if this interest of mine would be as strong as it is now? Crazy how that works. Pictures will be added later if I remember.
